ABSTRACT:
The conventional approach to fouling control in cooling systems combines the 'blind' application of biocides and anti-scale chemicals with periodic lab testing. This often results in the excessive use of chemicals, accelerating system corrosion and increasing toxic waste. This paper will describe a new approach to fouling control based on continuous & online monitoring of biofilm and scale formation withing cooling system components.
Employing a unique thermal analysis measurement technique, fouling thickness from a few microns to several millimeters can be detected. This enables the optimization of chemical treatments, maintenance procedures and lab testing intervals, thereby reducing operating costs and avoiding health risks.
